Who Is the Holy Spirit?
The One Who Gives Life, Leads Believers, and Brings Salvation, Revival, and Spiritual Awakening
The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Holy Trinity, fully God with the Father and the Son. He is not merely a force, power, influence, or emotion, but God Himself, eternally present and actively accomplishing His divine purpose throughout creation, redemption, and the lives of His people. From the opening verses of Genesis to the closing chapter of Revelation, the Holy Spirit reveals the Father’s will, glorifies Jesus Christ, gives life, transforms believers, builds Christ’s Church, and prepares God’s people for His glorious return. He is God himself present and active among God’s people and through out creation.
The Holy Spirit Before Creation and in Creation
The Holy Spirit was present before creation and participated in creation itself. The Scriptures reveal Him moving over the waters as God brought order, life, and beauty into the universe (Genesis 1:2). Throughout the Old Testament He empowered prophets, judges, kings, priests, and craftsmen to accomplish God’s purposes. In the New Testament He conceived Jesus Christ in the virgin Mary, descended upon Him at His baptism, empowered His earthly ministry, and raised Him from the dead, demonstrating His divine power over life itself (Luke 1:35; Matthew 3:16–17; Romans 8:11).
The Holy Spirit in Salvation and New Life
The Holy Spirit continues God’s work of salvation by convicting the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, revealing Jesus Christ, leading people to repentance, bringing about the new birth, and sealing all who believe as God’s children (John 16:8–15; John 3:5–8; Ephesians 1:13–14). Without the Holy Spirit there is no true conviction of sin, no genuine conversion, no spiritual understanding, no new birth, and no living relationship with God. Every person who comes to Jesus Christ does so through the gracious work of the Holy Spirit, who reveals the truth of the Gospel and draws people into God’s family.
Why Every Believer Depends Upon the Holy Spirit
For every believer is a child of God through Jesus Christ and qualifies to reign with Jesus Christ in the heavenly realm, and the Holy Spirit leads you to that qualification (Romans 8:14). The Holy Spirit is God’s abiding presence and constant Helper. Jesus promised that He would dwell with His people and live within them (John 14:16–17). He is the vessel through whom Jesus Christ blesses others by making Him flow like a river from the believer John 7:38-39). The Holy Spirit communicates and delivers all that Jesus desires, he manifests God’s omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence (John 16:13). He teaches God’s Word, guides believers into all truth, produces His fruit within their lives, distributes spiritual gifts, strengthens them for holy living, comforts them in trials, gives wisdom for daily decisions, and empowers them to fulfill God’s calling (John 14:26; Galatians 5:22–23; Acts 1:8).
The Christian life is therefore impossible apart from the Holy Spirit. Just as physical life depends upon breath, spiritual life depends upon the Holy Spirit. He brings believers into Christ, forms the character of Christ within them, enables them to understand God’s Word, empowers them to overcome sin, strengthens them to obey God’s will, equips them for ministry, and leads them into the purpose for which God created them. Believers are not called to live by human ability, determination, education, or religious effort, but by continual dependence upon the Holy Spirit, who forms, nurtures, mentors, guides, empowers, and deploys God’s people for His service (Romans 8:14; Zechariah 4:6; Exodus 31:1–6; Joshua 1:9).
The Holy Spirit Within and the Holy Spirit Upon
The Holy Scriptures reveal two complementary dimensions of the Holy Spirit’s ministry in the life of every believer: the Holy Spirit within and the Holy Spirit upon. These are not two different Holy Spirits but two complementary works of the same Holy Spirit.

When a person repents, believes in Jesus Christ, and receives Him as Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within them, bringing new birth, assuring them that they belong to God, transforming their character, and producing the fruit of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit within continually forms the life and character of Jesus Christ in every disciple (John 14:16–17; John 3:5–8; Romans 8:14–16).
The Holy Spirit also comes upon believers to empower them for witness, ministry, evangelism, discipleship, and service. Before His ascension, Jesus promised that His followers would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them so they could faithfully proclaim the Gospel to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). That promise was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit empowered the Church to proclaim Christ boldly (Acts 2).
The Holy Spirit within produces holiness. The Holy Spirit upon produces boldness. The Holy Spirit within transforms the believer. The Holy Spirit upon equips the believer to proclaim Jesus Christ and participate in God’s work of Salvation, Revival, and Spiritual Awakening.
The Holy Spirit and Revival and Spiritual Awakening
The Holy Spirit is the divine source of genuine revival and spiritual awakening. Throughout Scripture, revival begins when God’s people humble themselves, repent, return to His Word, seek His face, and allow the Holy Spirit to renew their hearts (2 Chronicles 7:14). Awakening follows as the Holy Spirit convicts unbelievers, reveals Jesus Christ, and draws people from darkness into God’s Kingdom. Genuine revival always exalts Jesus Christ, restores biblical truth, produces holiness, strengthens the Church, and leads believers into faithful obedience rather than emotional excitement alone.
Receiving and Walking with the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is received through faith in Jesus Christ. As people repent, believe the Gospel, and receive Christ as Lord and Savior, God gives them the gift of His Holy Spirit, who remains with them forever (Acts 2:38; Romans 8:9–11).
Believers maintain fellowship with the Holy Spirit by abiding in Jesus Christ, obeying God’s Word, cultivating a life of prayer and worship, walking in holiness, remaining sensitive to His voice, and refusing to grieve or quench His work through persistent sin or disobedience (Ephesians 4:30; 1 Thessalonians 5:19).
The Holy Spirit Always Glorifies Jesus Christ
The Holy Spirit never seeks to glorify Himself. His entire ministry is centered upon Jesus Christ. He reveals the Son, magnifies His finished work, makes His presence known within believers, empowers His Church, equips His people for service, and prepares the Bride of Christ for the return of her Lord.
Before His crucifixion, Jesus comforted His disciples by promising that although He was returning to the Father, He would not leave them as orphans. Through the coming of the Holy Spirit, Christ Himself would continue to be present with His people (John 14:18). The Holy Spirit therefore does not replace Jesus Christ; He represents the living presence of Jesus Christ within every believer, continuing His work, revealing His truth, and leading His people into a deeper relationship with Him.
Jesus also taught that the Holy Spirit would not speak on His own authority but would speak what He receives from Christ, revealing God’s truth and glorifying the Son (John 16:13–14). Wherever the Holy Spirit is genuinely at work, attention is directed to Jesus Christ—His person, His Gospel, His lordship, His holiness, His love, and His saving power.
Likewise, Jesus promised His disciples that He would remain with them always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20). He fulfills this promise through the abiding ministry of the Holy Spirit, who dwells within believers, guides them, teaches them, strengthens them, comforts them, and empowers them to live and serve in the name of Jesus Christ.
For this reason, the evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work is not the exaltation of human personalities, emotional experiences, or spiritual manifestations. The true evidence is that Jesus Christ is honored, the Holy Scriptures are obeyed, the Gospel is faithfully proclaimed, lives are transformed, disciples are formed, the Church is strengthened, and God’s Kingdom advances.
The Holy Spirit always leads people to Jesus Christ, enables believers to become more like Him, and faithfully represents His living presence until the day when the Lord Jesus Christ returns in glory.
